Gratitude Practice

Three things before your shift

Issue 2 - September 2026

You do not have to feel grateful on command. Begin with something you can describe accurately.

Before your shift, write down three things about the previous one. Keep each to a sentence. The exercise fits on a small card, which means you can carry it without finding room for another notebook.

Something that was ready

Perhaps your equipment was charged. Perhaps the rota arrived when you expected it. Write what was ready and how it helped you begin. A reliable starting point deserves to be noticed, even when it is what you were expecting.

Something you handled well

Choose one adjustment you made. You moved your bag, prepared a handover or found a way to keep the counter clear. Describe the action. You are building a record of the practical attention you bring to work.

Something you can carry forward

Choose a detail you can repeat. If standing at the counter left your feet sore, it may be remembering the comfortable shoes you meant to wear. Put them by the door before you set the card down.

This is a useful distinction: the first line records what the workplace provides, the second what you contribute, and the third what you can improve tomorrow. Each has its own place.

On difficult days, your examples may be small. The rota arrived. You managed. The shoes are ready. Keep the card anyway. You have found three things, and you are prepared for another shift.
