The Considerate Colleague

A considerate absence starts with a clear note

Issue 2 - September 2026

You wake with a fever during the busiest week of the rota. Before you have found the thermometer, you are thinking about the opening shift.

Follow your workplace’s sickness reporting process and get the care you need. Consideration begins with a clear notification. It does not require you to finish the shift from bed.

Send what the process needs

Keep the required contact details somewhere you can reach without opening your work laptop. State that you are unwell, that you cannot attend and when you expect to provide the next update, if you know. Use the required channel. You can care about the team without composing a separate apology for every colleague.

If you already have a handover note, point to it. A shared document is helpful precisely because you do not have to recreate it while ill. The staffing decision belongs with the person who has the rota.

Make tomorrow’s message smaller

Save a short notification template for another time. Leave space for the date and the next update. You are not expecting to be ill again; you are giving yourself one less task if you are.

Peak season makes a clear process especially valuable. Everyone has a great deal to manage, and your carefully prepared message is one small part of that work arriving in a usable form.

Once the notification is sent, put the phone within reach and rest. You have made your absence as easy as possible to receive. You can return to being available when you are well enough.
