Ask The Host

The second copy is for you

Issue 2 - September 2026

Q. I upload my CV, then the application asks me to type every job into boxes. By the last page my wrist aches. Am I doing something wrong?

You are completing two useful versions of the same story. The document carries your experience in your own format. The boxes put it into the employer’s format. It is understandable to hope that one might do both, but the application has provided space for each.

Before you begin another form, make a plain text version of your work history. Keep job titles, dates and descriptions in separate short paragraphs. You can then copy one section at a time without rearranging the rest of your career.

Make room for a pause

Check whether the form saves your progress. If it does, use that feature. If it does not, keep your answers in your own document before entering them. Your wrist does not need to remember what the application forgets.

You may meet a required field that does not fit your experience. Use an available explanation field to keep the record accurate. A short clarification is easier to reuse than a new account of the same difficulty.

Keep what you have earned

Save the confirmation with the version you submitted. When the next vacancy asks for the same information, you have a useful starting point.

This is preparation you can take with you. The employer keeps the application, and you keep the ability to apply again. Both of you finish with something of value, even when the position remains open.
