If you are enrolled in a workplace pension, a portion of your contributions is held in broad index funds. Those funds hold the largest companies in the economy, and in many cases that includes your own employer or its parent.

This is worth pausing on. When your employer reports a strong quarter, a small share of that strength returns to you, in the form of a fractionally larger retirement account. The efficiency you helped deliver is, in a modest and exact sense, paying you back.
